Cooking Rice in Rice Cooker

Cooking rice in a rice cooker seems like a no-brainer but because of the different types of rice, the settings on the rice cooker is different. Hence this documentation for my family.

Rice Cooker Operation:

Do note that these instructions are meant for the model of the rice cooker that I am using. It differs for different rice cookers.

  1. When the Rice cooker is switched on, the yellow light at the “Keep Warm/Cancel” button will be on. Press the button to turn it off before using “Menu” button to select the right program.
  2. Press “Start” button to commence cooking.
  3. When the rice is cooked, the “Keep Warm/Cancel” button light will be on and the “Start” button will be off.

Rice to Water Proportion:

The rice to water proportion is usually found at the back of the rice packaging as it differs depending on brands. If it is not available, you can use the following proportions as a guide instead:

  • Basmati Rice – 1cup of rice to 1.5 water level under “Plain”
  • Jasmine Rice/Japanese short-grain rice – 1 cup of rice to 1.2 water level under “Plain”
  • Glutinous Rice – 1 cup of rice to 1 water level under “Sweet”

Based on the outcome of the cooked rice, you can then adjust the water level to your preference for firmer/softer rice.

For 4 pax, the amount of rice and water will be as follows:

  • Basmati Rice – 1.5 cups of rice to 2.25 water level under “Plain”
  • Jasmine Rice/Japanese short-grain rice – 2 cups of rice to 2.4 water level under “Plain”
  • Glutinous Rice – 2 cups of rice to 2 water level under “Sweet”

Cooking Program:

  • Basmati Rice – use “Quick” program
  • Jasmine Rice/Japanese short-grain rice – use “Plain” program
  • Glutinous Rice – use “Sweet-Mixed” program
